Aceh: Update

...

Dear All,

A scale of 6.2 earthquake has shaken Banda Aceh at night time and caused a mass panic all over the city. Everybody ran to the direction of the inland and yelling, "Water is coming to the West coast area....Run, Run!"

Here at World Harvest’s base camp, all of our team was in a total shock and everybody is in terror. I calmed our team and assured them that we are in the safe area. Immediately, I briefed them on what precaution to be taken and gave them the general direction toward Blang Bintang, the airport which would be the safe place to go to if anything happened.

I grabbed a flashlight and a rope and then headed out to our community asking for any 3 other locals to follow me to check the West Coast. We headed to Lhok Nga area as soon as possible. Everybody was terrified and confused on the street. We kept going and the panic did not stop. The scene was totally like the moment before the Dec 26 Tsunami hit Banda Aceh. At last, we get to the shoreline and check to see any sound of Tsunami water is coming. We checked the local animals and they seemed to be calm. Then, we know that this is only a false alarm and there will be no Tsunami following the earthquake. The people there have been traumatized by the December 26 tsunami tragedy and got panic easily whenever there is an earthquake.

We returned to the city and told everybody that the Tsunami is not coming for the second time. It's safe to go home.

(A letter from Sam Soh, World Harvest Ground Manager in Aceh)

Until now, earthquakes are still hitting Aceh. There has never been a week that goes by without any earthquake, from mild to strong. Because of this earthquake that seems never-ending, telephone line and internet connection has not been available. Please continue to pray for our staffs in Aceh.

START WITH LOVE

On February 4th, World Harvest/Somebody Cares Indonesia sent another volunteer from United States to provide counseling service to the tsunami victims in Aceh. The people from World Harvest Aceh base camp felt so blessed with the presence of Darryl Richman, our counselor.

By now, Daryl Richman, a 70 year old counselor, has been known as the wise man and godly father figure by the people of Aceh. The people of Aceh quoted, “he has contributed a great deal counseling youth and survivors in refugee camps and general hospital Zainoel Abidin. His love and care has brought many breakthroughs and touched our hearts deeply.

When Daryl was first picked up by the World Harvest staff in Aceh, he told the staff in the car, “I want to start here with love.”
