Pope

Please remember with all this talk of the pope and cardinals, that if a man declares himself to be a man of God, then he needs to be a man of God's Book: the Bible and the Bible alone. If you teach about God, then stick to the Book and the Blood of Christ and the Blessed Hope of Jesus' return. Prayers to Mary and her being the Queen of Heaven or co-redempterix along with Jesus are not found in the Bible and so the man who declares that as truth is no man of God. Please read the Book and trust Jesus as Savior.

"The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life." Romans 6:23. Do you have eternal life? Please come to God's House, and hear the sincere milk of the Word at Landmark Baptist when in Richmond, Virginia.

Dear Marc,

I too have serious questions about the biblical basis or real focus of the deceased pope's faith. Having read his writings & the Bible, I too, much prefer the Bible!!

Jesus is Lord!

The short note above [hastily posted April 6, 2005] is in reference particular to the approach to gospel sharing that wins-friends to the neglect of a call to repentance from false messiah's, false prophets, false teachers, and other jesuses. John Paul II did not always clearly state that Christ's uniqueness necessitates vigorous evangelism. Honestly, many Muslims despise that kind of uncertain call to repentance. I think it is a disservice to them & to Christ to dialogue without a clear warning of the wrath that is to come (not from "our" military, but from the Lord of Hosts, Jesus.)

I regret that it took this long to finish this entry and clarify what I referred to.

The key issue was well stated by Bro. Bob Yawberg: "Will the Pope listen to God?"

(On the Permanent Validity of the Church's Missionary Mandate)
Encyclical promulgated on 7 December 1990.

Excerpts which are the most problematic.

From section 55:
I recently wrote to the bishops of Asia: "Although the Church gladly acknowledges whatever is true and holy in the religious traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam as a reflection of that truth which enlightens all people, this does not lessen her duty and resolve to proclaim without fail Jesus Christ who is 'the way, and the truth and the life.'...The fact that the followers of other religions can receive God's grace and be saved by Christ apart from the ordinary means which he has established does not thereby cancel the call to faith and baptism which God wills for all people."[100] Indeed Christ himself "while expressly insisting on the need for faith and baptism, at the same time confirmed the need for the Church, into which people enter through Baptism as through a door."[101] Dialogue should be conducted and implemented with the conviction that the Church is the ordinary means of salvation and that she alone possesses the fullness of the means of salvation.[102]

[What is the biblical basis for the assertion that people can be saved by Christ apart from the ordinary means? ... Except that the {Roman Catholic} Church is defined as the ordinary means. Where in scripture do we find the last statement supported, {realizing of course, that Church means Roman Catholic Church?} A part of the body is confused with the whole; a prominent member, with the head. I do not write this to defame the dead, but to encourage all, to think and read honestly.]

From section 57:
Dialogue is a path toward the kingdom and will certainly bear fruit, even if the times and seasons are known only to the Father (cf. Acts 1:7). [Mert: What does Acts 1:7 have to do with "dialogue"?]

[I did not read anything in the discussion on Baptism near the end about "a pledge of a good conscience towards God" which was written by 1 Peter 3:21, the pope's "predecessor."]

Vatican Is Rethinking Relations With Islam

By Daniel Williams and Alan Cooperman
Washington Post Foreign Service
Friday, April 15, 2005; Page A20

ROME, April 12 -- After two decades of contact and dialogue with the Islamic world under Pope John Paul II, the Vatican is rethinking an outreach program that critics say is diluting Catholicism and has brought almost no benefits to beleaguered Catholic minorities in Muslim countries.

The late pontiff undertook the drive as part of a broad effort to open channels to other religions. He applied a personal stamp by stepping into a mosque in Damascus and meeting with Muslim groups more than 60 times. He also visited a synagogue in Rome and Jerusalem's Western Wall.

[Mert: the following seems problematic to me, for example.]

John Paul furthered these efforts in his travels and by hosting inter-faith prayer sessions for peace, beginning with a three-day meeting in Assisi, Italy, in 1986. Among the participants were leaders from the Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist faiths.

Two excerpts:

From section 4

"The Church's constant missionary proclamation is endangered today by relativistic theories which seek to justify religious pluralism, not only de facto but also de iure (or in principle). As a consequence, it is held that certain truths have been superseded; for example, the definitive and complete character of the revelation of Jesus Christ, the nature of Christian faith as compared with that of belief in other religions, the inspired nature of the books of Sacred Scripture, the personal unity between the Eternal Word and Jesus of Nazareth, the unity of the economy of the Incarnate Word and the Holy Spirit, the unicity and salvific universality of the mystery of Jesus Christ, the universal salvific mediation of the Church, the inseparability — while recognizing the distinction — of the kingdom of God, the kingdom of Christ, and the Church, and the subsistence of the one Church of Christ in the Catholic Church. - The roots of these problems are to be found in certain presuppositions of both a philosophical and theological nature, which hinder the understanding and acceptance of the revealed truth. Some of these can be mentioned: the conviction of the elusiveness and inexpressibility of divine truth, even by Christian revelation; relativistic attitudes toward truth itself, according to which what is true for some would not be true for others; the radical opposition posited between the logical mentality of the West and the symbolic mentality of the East; the subjectivism which, by regarding reason as the only source of knowledge, becomes incapable of raising its “gaze to the heights, not daring to rise to the truth of being”;8 the difficulty in understanding and accepting the presence of definitive and eschatological events in history; the metaphysical emptying of the historical incarnation of the Eternal Logos, reduced to a mere appearing of God in history; the eclecticism of those who, in theological research, uncritically absorb ideas from a variety of philosophical and theological contexts without regard for consistency, systematic connection, or compatibility with Christian truth; finally, the tendency to read and to interpret Sacred Scripture outside the Tradition and Magisterium of the Church."

[I would edit the final phrases of each statement: "and the subsistence of the one Church of Christ in the Catholic Church. ... finally, the tendency to read and to interpret Sacred Scripture outside the Tradition and Magisterium of the Church" in this way "the subsistence of the one Church of Christ in all those who gather to witness to the Cross & Resurrection of Jesus Christ ... and finally, the tendency to read and to interpret the Sacred Scripture apart from prayer and the loving fellowship of the body of Christ, united across history, cultural, and other parochial interests."

From section 22:
"God ‘desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth' (1 Tim 2:4); that is, God wills the salvation of everyone through the knowledge of the truth. Salvation is found in the truth. Those who obey the promptings of the Spirit of truth are already on the way of salvation. But the Church, to whom this truth has been entrusted, must go out to meet their desire, so as to bring them the truth. Because she believes in God's universal plan of salvation, the Church must be missionary.” (Taken from the Catechism.)

[Mert: note that Ratzinger remains pretty strong on emphasizing the uniqueness of Catholicism, but stronger in emphasizing the uniqueness of Christ in revelation & need for what is called evangelism. Bro. Ratzinger may have to dress up too much because of his position, but his theology is headed in the right direction: to Christ!]

Family Vacation: How-To Plan One & How-To Enjoy It.

How to plan a family vacation.
(These are based on my Dad's recommendations & experiences & conversations I have had with him.)

Pray for God's wisdom throughout, enjoy the whole process, and be thankful at all times!!

1. Decide where you all want to go. What is your goal?
(Take a poll of primary desired destinations.)

2. Figure out the route. www.mapquest.com can help with this.
a. Discuss how many days you are willing to travel.
b. Discuss how long you are willing to be on the road each day.
c. Contact any friends / family you wish to visit along the route.
i. Don't invite yourself over.
ii. If they invite you vigorously, accept the invitation.
iii. Don't overstay your welcome & be helpful while there.
d. Arrange to stay in hotels / motels where needed. @ google.com, enter the name of the city / area you will be in and "cheap hotels". I.e. "New York City cheap hotels"
e. When you have found the best deals on hotels, call the hotel direct, with a written down record of what you can get the room for online. Remind them of the online rate when you ask for the best price if the best price they cite is higher.

3. Decide what you will see & do along the way.
a. Ask the hosts / hoteliers what they think would be good sites to see along the way.
b. Look in the encyclopedia, a standard atlas, online travel guides, travel guides @ the library, or remember past visits & history lessons.

4. Print &/or email the itinerary.
a. Where you will be & on what days.
b. Phone #'s of the hotels that you will be at.
c. Any #'s for those cell phones you will have with you.
d. [If you are taking along any minors that are not your own kids, it is wise to send the itinerary to their parents also.]
e. [Make sure that any permission forms for any kids from other families are with you.]

Mert's & Sheila's Memo Sheet - April

Dear Family & Friends,

It came to pass, when the time had come for Jesus to be received up, that
He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face. As they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" But He turned and rebuked them, [and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. The Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them."] Then, they went to another village. - Luke 9:51-56 (Based on the NKJV)

Jesus set his face towards Jerusalem ... and so the Samaritans didn't particularly want to let him stay in town. There were still lingering issues of prejudice. They wanted Jesus to be the Samaritan Savior rather than the Joy of Jerusalem. But Jesus had already said that salvation did not come from Samaria. The Lord Jesus did not want to be associated with a city that was rooted in violence and deception (see Genesis 34). Nor was his purpose to destroy, but to save. In order to save others, Jesus had to suffer. He was not happy with a part of God's word & a part of His revelation. He taught the whole counsel of God (see Luke 24:44ff). Jesus knew he was not going to start His church in Samaria. He decided that if he was not going to be welcomed as "a traveler just a passin' through," then he would go on around them and go on to Jerusalem. His time had come. The purpose for which he had come was about to be fulfilled. His work was almost finished. Jesus was heading to the cross.

Each step he took was a heavy one, a glorious one. Though the people with him did not know it fully, he was about to die. He was going to suffer at the hands of evil men & be handed over to the Romans to be crucified by them. When these two followers, James and John (who some believe may have been kin to Mary, the mother of our Master), were about to call down fire, Jesus rebuked them. Oh, how quick we are to judge! To condemn, to be angry at those who mistreat us. Jesus, ever patient & kind, chided them.

When others hurt, Jesus heals.
When others threaten, Jesus thrills.
When others are bitter, Jesus is better.
When others fight rejection, Jesus faces rejection.
When others pout, Jesus prays.
When others destroy, Jesus delivers.
When others turn away, Jesus can be trusted.
When others gripe, Jesus gathers.
When others mumble, Jesus makes a way.
When others sin, Jesus saves.
Yes, my friend, you & I need Jesus!

What a wonderful Savior Jesus is to us! For years, I have been challenged, encouraged, rebuked, instructed, and blessed by Jews for Jesus who state very clearly: "We exist to make the messiahship of Jesus an unavoidable issue to our Jewish people worldwide." Actually, Jesus himself was here for this same reason. You and I are also here for this same reason: to make known in word & deed the person & position & purification that is in the Prince of Peace alone!

As Jesus set His face to go to Jerusalem, so I have set my face to go to
Detroit (though I do not know whether a fruitful harvest or a severe
difficulty awaits us there). It is the Father's will that matters not my
own.

Our own mission remains:
Pursuing God's glory with ...
the whole Church sharing the whole Christ with the whole person
of every person of every people in every language
of all lands for all time with all confidence,
focusing on the least loved, least reached, and least prominent.

PRAY 4 US:
* That in the days ahead, we will be focused on the peace, the joy, and all the good which God has stored up for us in Christ Jesus.
* Give thanks with us for the little ways God has been meeting our daily needs, though we don't know all that awaits us, we do know God has the best in store.

I still need to connect with some folks in regard to such details as:
1. Housing.
2. An office. (Where I might continue the ministry God has called me to: PTAP www.pray-ap.info and Advocacy for the Yemeni & other Muslim peoples (see also http://www.strategicnetwork.org/) and resuming the "work" of recording my thoughts in poetic form. Also working on a Bible-based ESL curriculm for children.
3. A number of people / churches have expressed a desire to give
financially to support us. Anyone who wishes a summary of last year's income & outgo of $ for our family will receive it on request. I was very pleasantly _surprised_ last week: we will be getting all our taxes paid back from last year!! (The Lord gives & the Lord takes away ... blessed be His Name!!)
A simple reminder for those who meet Muslims:

We ask you to pray for MECO, as we consider service with them:

4. I believe we have some direction regarding a church family, as well as the presence of some great team-mates. The Lord of the Harvest in the Detroit-Dearborn area has been at work for years!!

5. Continued growth in grace & wisdom. We need the word, prayer, &
fellowship especially during this transition time.

QUOTE: It has amazed me at several conferences and other events that people still say things like "I'm a little tired of all this talk about unreached peoples." Such a statement is nearly always said in a way that implies the focus on the unreached is a passing fad - a marketing ploy - and now other things should be given attention. ... the concept of the unevangelized or the unreached WILL NOT GO AWAY until the task is finished. The fact that there are unevangelized and unreached peoples, cities, provinces and countries is a simple statement of the fact that we have not yet finished the task. - Justin Long

WORLD NEWS:

INDONESIA: An Easter Monday quake off the coast of Sumatra devastated an island that was 90% inhabited by Christians. Nias island was spiritually impacted by German missionaries back in the 1860's, when they led many of the native headhunters to Christ. The 28 March earthquake measured 8.7 on the Richter scale and took the lives of approximately 2500 of the island's 700,000 residents-on top of the several hundred who died in the Dec.26th tsunami. 75% of the main town was destroyed, including at least 2 churches and schools. Christian agencies are among the NGOs organizing relief efforts. In spite of some opposition, Mel Gibson's blockbuster "The Passion of The Christ" was broadcast on national Indonesian TV at 8 pm on March 25th. Gibson gave permission for the movie to be shown without censorship or commercial breaks. Although some provinces were unable to receive the broadcast, most of the country could watch it. over 110,000 requested the free VCD offered at the close. Evidently, the Lord seems to be wanting to communicate hope to the peoples of Indonesia. Please pray that the peoples would have faith to praise Him so that the rocks would not feel the need to do so quite so vigorously. - via Debbie Meroff mailto:deborahmeroff@aol.com

CHINA (from GENEVA): On April 5th, with previous agreement from both the Commission Secretary’s Office and the UN security guards, Rev. Bob Fu spoke to the general assembly of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) at their assembly in Geneva. He made the intervention speech highlighting the imprisonment and torture of Pastor Cai Zhuohua, Pastor Gong Shengliang and Mr. Chen Jingmao. However, when Rev. Fu displayed and demonstrated an electric-shock baton, which was smuggled out of China and had been used by the Chinese police and interrogators to torture religious victims, the Chinese delegate immediately registered a complaint that the electric baton made them “feel threatened.” Both Rev. Fu’s UN badge and the electric baton were taken away by the UN security officials without Giving any explanation, and he was ordered to leave the UN complex immediately. China has demanded an apology from Rev. Fu and A Woman’s Voice International, the organization that sponsored the meeting. Pray the Lord will strengthen those in China who are imprisoned for their faith, especially 74-year-old Chen Jingmao, who was sentenced in October 2002 to four years in prison. Give thanks to God that information about the treatment of Christian imprisoned for Christ is being made known worldwide. Pray publicity regarding the treatment of Rev. Fu will cause the Chinese government to “lose face” and bring about the release of those imprisoned for their faith in Jesus. - mailto:Intercessors.Network@Comhem.se

AUSTRALIA: Rahel Landrum reports, “Pricilla Bourne and Steve Cryderman were sortying (handing out tracts) when a Muslim man in a wheelchair came to take a tract. He began to tell them that he believes in Jesus because He has been revealing Himself in dreams on a regular basis! The man said that he has begun to share about Jesus with all his Muslim friends. You guessed it; they don't like to hear it at all. Let's rejoice that God is revealing Himself in wondrous ways to people that otherwise would never hear of Him. That is our heart in Jews for Jesus, that many Muslims will also know Jesus and His peace. Julie Cryderman, a gifted volunteer from Oregon, has joined the campaign in Melbourne. We had her doing “Psalm reading.” Many people come to the table (which is complete with a lit candle and a Bible, which is open to the book of Psalms). Some come with their palms spread out as they sit down. So julie took the palms of 12 passersby one night and looking straight into their eyes said "I see death—the wages of sin is death. But I also see life, for Jesus has come to forgive and bring life.” Julie led eight people to receive Messiah in their hearts in one evening! - Source: Jews for Jesus

ISRAEL: One ministry which I believe every Christian should be praying for is Musalaha: Let us Reconcile! They have been bringing together Jewish & Palestinian Christians for 15 years to pray & seek the Lord's grace together & to reason together than their sins might be washed clean. This has involved work with various leaders, with youth, with women, and working to produce an Arabic-Hebrew hymnal. God has been blessing! Please pray for their next steps as they look to reach out and work towards reconciliation & reaching out among the non-believing Jews & the non-believing Palestinians. Much wisdom, discernment, and tact will be required. Only the Lord Jesus can effect true peace; To Him be all glory!

He does not get sidetracked on mystically trying to define apocalyptic figures, etc. I personally found what he wrote to be challenging in my understanding of the good news. FACTS in FOCUS:
+ John 3:16 quotes Jesus as saying, "God so loved the _world_ that He sent His only begotten Son so that anyone who believes in Him should not go out of date & rot but have a life that is rooted in eternity and that flourishes forever." (IPV - Internet Paraphrased Version)

* There are ~25,000,000 Yemeni people around the world.
* The Yemeni & other South Semitic cultures trace their roots back to before Islam, before Christ, to the time of "Bilqis" whom they believe met Solomon in Jerusalem as the Queen of Sheba.
* There are 25,000-50,000 Yemeni Arabs in Metro Detroit. (About as many
folks as in my home-town / county). About the same number of Hadrami are
dispersed throughout Java, Indonesia who retain the Hadrami identity. (Their ancestors came from the same area as the bin Laden family.)
* Sheila & I have met Hadrami in Java & Yemeni in Metro Detroit.
* The metro Detroit area has the distinction of being the first area to have the Islamic call to prayer sounded out in the USA and also having the largest concentration of Arabs in the USA. (Estimates: from a conservative 200,000+ Arabs and 100,000+ Muslims to a combined total of 500,000 to an expangelistic estimate of 800,000!)
* The Yemeni are known as among the most zealous for Islam & the legacy of Mohammed.

==> When I began praying for the Yemeni & other Muslims in 1993, I knew little of the work. The more I learn of what God has done already, the more He does. His initiative in saving people will ALWAYS outstrip my intercession, but on the last day, I want to be counted as one who was on His side: Expecting great things, attempting great things. Oh, what a glorious King we serve!

* There are roughly the same number of Arabs in the world as people in the USA. Should trends continue: The Arab population will surpass the # of USA residents. The seed of "Laughter" (Isaac) is still needed for those who claim "The-God-who-Hears" (Ismael) as their Father.
* Delayed hope makes the heart sick. But desire fulfilled is a tree of life!
* More Arab missionaries serve today than at any other known time in
history.
* More Arabs are coming to Christ than at any other time in history.
* More Arabs are seeking, reading, & hearing God's Word today than at ever before.
* Local believers have begun meeting together in 3 Arabian Peninsula countries for discipleship & as small gatherings since PTAP began. This is a first in 1400 years!
