Latin Culture

From some workers:

I'm learning about how people think (the other day my language teacher ask were my safety pin was, I didn't know what she was talking about, she explained that all pregnant women have to wear a safety pin to protect the baby), and I now have something visibly in common with other women.

My reply:

It is good to hear that sweet things are happening!! It is also a joy to hear about the progress of the students. It will be such a joy to hear when the Lord works to an even greater degree the blessings given in Genesis 1:26-28.

Just a question: Does this idea of having a "safety pin" have to do with the linguistic parallel or somehow, the pin itself holds a certain power to guard the child's soul, or is it sanitary somehow? How does the pin work? Does it? I've never heard of such a thing and, of course, I tend to be somewhat curious about things like this.

I use to tell a joke about always keeping dehydrated water on me so that I would never go thirsty and a solar powered flashlight so that I could always see where I was going and a sterilized ruler for safety measure. God's wisdom on you all. May the Lord be to your future son a shield & a great reward!

Again, blessings on you all,

Peace,
Mert Hershberger

If you care to, you may read on to find my own little bit of research which I did just to check out my suspicion. Do with this what you will. I think that you guys do have a real opportunity to demonstrate the power of the Holy Spirit to protect your child according to the Word of Christ. Again, may you have lots of wisdom & discernment to guard the church which will emerge.

Blessings again. Christ is the Victor!

Fascinating facts about the invention of the Safety Pin by Walter Hunt in 1849.

Walter Hunt had no trouble thinking up new ideas. First he invented a machine to spin flax. Then he invented a fire engine gong, a forest saw, a stove that burned hard coal. His inventions worked, but he just did not have the knack for making money from them. One day in 1849 Walter Hunt wanted to pay a fifteen-dollar debt to a friend. So he decided to invent something new.

From a piece of brass wire about eight inches long, coiled at the center and shielded at one end, he made the first safety pin. He took out a patent on his invention, sold the rights to it for four hundred dollars, paid his friend back and had three hundred eighty-five dollars to spare.

Then he watched his latest brainstorm go on to become a million dollar money earner for someone else.

There is a strong belief in many Latin American cultures in natural forces, with the three most important being the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. Belief in the power of these "gods" explains beliefs such as the expectation that exposure of the pregnant woman to an eclipse can cause cleft lip or palate in the newborn. The ancient Aztec practice of placing a knife on the woman's abdomen before she went out at night to protect her unborn baby, has led to the current practice of placing a key or safety pin on one’s clothing during pregnancy.
