Power and choice. David McCuster claimed a few days ago that if we understand "power" as the ability to choose, then we can determine to choose less. He was riffing of David Roger's comments on power, but David pointed out that choosing less lofty dreams isn't really a solution most people want. Instead, we think we need X to have Y, so we long for X, something that isn't tenable, while Y, usually an emotional state is easily atainable.
So, what do I get from this and why am I mentioning it here? Because I really need to examine my goals (defining them first would be good) and why I want those goals. I tend to be self-destructive, so I've gotta figure out why I keep trying to do these things that don't get me as far as I want to go.
I came across J. Lileks's side which contains The Bleat ("it's an old-style web journal"). He has a very nice piece on his new-found 40ish fatherhood and the perspective it gives him when he meets childless-by-choice people.
It seems that many of the Childless-by-choice crowds are rabid, angry materialists. To which I say: chill, love a little. Life is good.
By the way, Lileks' site contains one of the more amusing 404's I've seen.
